Crime Prevention Division

The Crime Prevention Unit is responsible for providing programs to our citizens that educate while at the same time promote prevention strategies. Crime Prevention provides School Resource Officers for Carver Jr. High School and Dorman High School. The Gang Resistance Education and Training (G.R.E.A.T.) program is taught to elementary and middle school aged children within Spartanburg School District Seven. The G.R.E.A.T. program, funded by a federal grant, seeks to promote positive alternatives to gang violence while at the same time creating positive and trusting relationships between law enforcement and youth. Crime Prevention also produces and hosts the local cable access television show, Safety Scene.

Some services provided by the division are:

Neighborhood Watch -  the Crime Prevention Division assists groups with implementation of a neighborhood watch association.  Once formed, an officer from the Patrol Division will be assigned to attend all scheduled meetings.

G.R.E.A.T.-  the Gang Resistance Education And Training Program is a school-based law enforcement officer-instructed classroom curriculum.  This program seeks to lower youth delinquency , youth violence, and gang membership.  The program consists of four components:  middle school, elementary school, summer, and family.

CPTED - Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design is a concept based on deterring crime based on landscape design, lighting, building design, etc.

Kid ID - is a computer generated  disc that is provided upon completion to the participant.  Disc contains information unique to a child.  Features include:  height, weight, and other identifying marks.

Safety Scene - is broadcast daily on local city channel 14.  Production is made possible with the assistance of Charter Communications.  Check your local cable listings for viewing times.

Alcohol and Tobacco Compliance -  The Spartanburg Public Safety Department is a member of a county wide Tobacco and Alcohol Compliance Team (TAC).  Spartanburg Alcohol And Drug Abuse Commission (SADAC) is the lead agency which utilizes officers from this division and the Spartanburg County Sheriff's Office.
