Spartanburg Public Safety Alarm Reduction Program

In response to the overwhelming number of false alarms, the Spartanburg Public Safety Department is proposing a False Alarm Reduction Ordinance.

Responding to false alarms consumes many hours of the officers and firefighters of the Spartanburg Public Safety Department time and cost the taxpayers of the City of Spartanburg hundreds of thousands of dollars annually.  The unnecessary response of law enforcement vehicles and Fire apparatus expose our citizens as well as or employees to accident exposure. Responding to false alarms also diverts police and fire from real emergencies and proactive activities.

Be a responsible alarm owner.  Don’t cause unnecessary alarm responses.

What are some of the causes of False Alarms?

  • Using incorrect keypad codes

  • Failing to train authorized users

  • Weak or Dead system back-up batteries

  • Improper installation of equipment

Here are some ways to help reduce False Alarms.

  • Know how to operate and be familiar with your alarm system

  • Make sure that anyone with a key to your home or business knows the alarm password or code

  • Make sure your equipment is inspected and properly serviced by a licensed alarm technician al least annually

  • If your system is more than five years old, consider an upgrade of your alarm system

  • Be sure all protected doors and windows are locked

  • Do not leave anything that will move (pets, plants, balloons, drapes, blinds, holiday decorations, fans, heaters, etc) in a room that is protected by a motion detector.

  • Have the sensitivity settings on motion detectors and glass break sensors adjusted so that unwanted sounds or items do not activate them. (thunder or outside construction)

  • Have your alarm system checked and tested regularly. Having a service plan helps reduce future cost of equipment repairs and false alarm fines.
