Fire Suppression Section
The Fire Division’s Suppression Section is comprised of 69
firefighters and fire officers who staff the City’s five fire stations.
Suppression personnel work a 24-hour on / 48-hour off shift. Th e fire stations
are staffed 24-hours each day, 365 days a year. Each shift is led by an
Assistant Chief that serves as the Shift Commander. The Division’s five engine
companies, one ladder company, and one rescue company respond to over 2,100
incidents each year. The Suppression Section is capable of responding to
incidents involving fires, hazardous materials releases, technical rescue
emergencies, aircraft fire and rescue, and emergency medical requests. The
Section works closely with the Office of Fire Prevention, its mutual aid
partners in Spartanburg County, and other public and private agencies to provide
comprehensive fire prevention, emergency preparedness, and emergency response
services. Suppression personnel regularly participate in activities to ensure a
constant state of readiness for themselves and their equipment. Firefighters
and fire officers exercise daily to make certain that they are physically
prepared for the rigors of firefighting and rescue operations. The Division’s
Training Officer assures that personnel are prepared to provide the highest
quality emergency life safety services through weekly, monthly and annual
training in basic and advanced fire, rescue, and hazardous materials topics.
Suppression personnel perform daily, weekly, monthly, semi-annual, and annual
inspections and maintenance on emergency response vehicles, and fire and rescue
equipment. Suppression personnel staff the Accreditation Office which is
responsible for collecting required documentation and data, as well as ensuring
that all guidelines, policies, procedures and updates are adhered to in this
ongoing Accreditation process. Suppression
personnel are actively involved in our “Preservation through Prevention”
activities through in-service fire safety surveys, public fire safety
presentations, child car seat installations, fire hydrant maintenance, and
pre-emergency planning.
