Patrol Division
The Uniform Patrol Division is the largest and most visible branch of the Law Enforcement Department. Patrol is the backbone of our police organization and members serve as first responders to all reported emergencies, crimes in progress and other calls for service. Members of the division also conduct preliminary investigations, enforce traffic laws and engage in self-initiated activity. The Patrol Division utilizes foot patrol, one- and two-officer cars, undercover cars, motorcycles and bicycles to patrol the City of Spartanburg.
Officers are equipped with marked patrol cars complete with computers and other equipment needed to perform their duties. Officers spend the majority of their shift working from their vehicle while out in the community so they are accessible and available to the public.
We recognize that we cannot impact crime without the collaboration and involvement of the citizens and business owners of this great community. Any successes we realize hinge on the involvement and support of others. Our Uniform Patrol Division and Crime Prevent Unit work with neighborhood groups to improve their surroundings. Neighbors looking out for each other working along side law enforcement are critical components to creating a safer community.
Traffic Enforcement Unit
The Traffic Enforcement Unit serves as the primary unit responsible for the planning, analysis and coordination of the department's police traffic services. The Traffic Enforcement Unit investigates collisions, enforces traffic laws, coordinates Public Safety checkpoints and provides training and information at public functions such as schools and special interest groups.
In 2008 our Traffic Enforcement Unit was awarded the Outstanding South Carolina Traffic Safety Community Award by AAA. Selection was based on a review of traffic collision statistics, the number of law enforcement officers per capita and the existence of a special traffic division containing an active safety program. The University of North Carolina provided the statistical analysis and the Carolina Motor Club Foundation made the selection.
Also in 2008, several officers were recognized for their instruction of the American Association of Retired Persons (AARP) Driver Safety Program. This training educates seniors on the effect of aging on driving.
Our Traffic Enforcement Unit continues to focus on citizen education and aggressively seeking to identify traffic violations aimed at reducing collisions and creating safer driving conditions in the City of Spartanburg.
