Office of Fire Prevention
The Office of Fire
Prevention (OFP), under direction of the Fire Marshal, is responsible for Public
Fire and Life Safety Education, Community Programs and Services,
Fire/Arson/Explosion Investigations, Fire and Life Safety Surveys, Plans Review,
and Commercial Building Maintenance. In cooperation with the Fire Division’s
suppression personnel, the Office conducts and oversees fire and life safety
programs for the community. OFP personnel administer many community based
programs and services, including the Juvenile Fire Setter Intervention Program,
the Smoke Detector Installation Program, the Community Assistance Program, and
the Senior Citizens Fire Safety Education Program. Staff members strive to
assist local businesses w ith emergency planning and preparedness, employee fire
safety, and fire extinguisher training. Another important OFP program is the
origin and cause investigation of fires involving suspected arson, juvenile
involvement, large property loss, or injury. The annual Fire and Life Safety
Survey Program for commercial, institutional, educational, and multi-family
residential properties is critical to the Division’s fire prevention and
emergency response efforts. All Fire Division personnel participate in the
routine survey of these properties to identify and remove basic fire and life
safety hazards; and to collect valuable information about occupancies that can
assist firefighters in the event of a fire or other emergency incidents.
Lastly, the Office’s Plans Review program ensures that new and renovated
buildings are designed and constructed in compliance with applicable Codes and
Standards, and the latest fire protection and life safety technological
innovations. The work programs developed by the Office of Fire Prevention
reflect its commitment to the Division’s motto of “Preservation through
Prevention”, and making Spartanburg the most livable community for our citizens.
