Tactical Neutralization Team The Spartanburg Public Safety Department’s tactical team (SWAT) was implemented in 1989, to handle certain hazardous incidents and situations outside of the normal function of the patrol division. These incidents may require specialized equipment, training, and techniques that are beyond the daily norms for most police personnel. The Spartanburg Public Safety Department’s tactical team is a part-time team. Our current team consists of 18 members, which includes (1) commander, (1) assistant commander, (4) medics, and (12) team members. The tactical team is divided into two (2) teams each with a team leader and assistant team leader. Teams are on call every other week. Service with the Tactical Unit is strictly voluntary. Officers interested in assignment to the team must meet certain pre-requisites prior to going through a stringent selection process that is physically and psychologically demanding. The Spartanburg Public Safety Department’s Tactical Unit responds to high risk incidents, hostage situations, barricaded subjects, violent felony warrants, high risk warrants, all narcotic search warrants, VIP dignitary protection, and special assignments.
