Traffic Collision Investigation- The traffic division investigates collisions throughout the city. Emphasis is placed on causative factors with the goal of lowering the incidence of collisions.

 

        Sgt. Paul Roper investigates a vehicle collision.

 

 

Fatality Response Team- traffic officers have obtained advanced training in accident reconstruction. The division has a fully equipped team on call to respond to all fatalities and serious collisions.

 

Traffic Enforcement- the traffic division has officers on duty 24 hours a day to detect and apprehend those persons who violate the traffic laws of our community. Officers utilize radar, handheld radar units, police motorcycles, low profile and unmarked police units to accomplish this task.

 

         Traffic officer conducts a vehicle stop.

 

 

Traffic Coordination at Special Events-  the traffic division is responsible for insuring the safety and smooth flow of those persons attending special events throughout the city.

 

DUI Enforcement traffic officers are trained in advanced DUI detection procedures and frequently come in contact with impaired drivers during their tour of duty.

 

Provide Escorts of Large Vehiclesthe traffic division will assist persons moving houses and oversize loads through the city.

The following is a medley of additional programs currently offered to the public:

 

Fatal Vision Goggle Program

    The traffic division will schedule a speaker for civic groups, schools, and businesses to address safe driving practices. A component of the class consists of the Fatal Vision Goggles. The goggles simulate varying levels of alcohol impairment and when worn, affect the driving ability of the participant.

 55 Alive Program

 

    This is a program whose objective is providing information on driving safety issues faced by the mature driver. Participants must be 55 years of age and pay a ten-dollar fee ($10). The class consists of two 4-hour sessions and is usually held in the community. Topics discussed are traffic laws, driving in various weather conditions, and driving and taking medication.

 

    The successful participant will receive a certificate upon completion and will usually receive a discount on insurance premiums.

Child Safety Seat Technician Program

 

The traffic division has certified child safety seat technicians who will inspect your car seat for proper installation and maintenance. The technicians are certified through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Community Service Center

The Community Service Center is a mobile, self-contained communications and command center for field commanders during natural or civil disasters. The Community Service Center also serves as a mobile substation for the Public Safety Department, providing facilities to move into any neighborhood or community within the city.

Operation Lifesaver

 

    A program that targets preschoolers through adults of the dangers associated with disregarding rail crossings.

Pedestrian Safety Crossing Course

 

        Taught in conjunction with the seatbelt safety course, this is a program that targets children as they walk to and from school. The program consists of the dangers associated with crossing the street, talking to strangers, and walking on the sidewalk.

Seat Belt Safety Course

 

        A program that is taught to preschool through junior high students that tells of the dangers of not wearing a seatbelt.

School Crossing Guards

 

 Working in partnership with School Districts 6 and 7, the Public Safety Department employees 18 adult school crossing guards. The guards are stationed at all elementary and junior high schools in the city.

Anyone interested in applying for a position as an adult school crossing guard may do so at the Human Resources department at City Hall or Online.
