Uniform Patrol The Uniform Patrol Division is the largest and most visible branch of the Law Enforcement Division. Patrol is the backbone of our police organization and members serve as first responders to all reported emergencies, crimes in progress and other calls for service. Patrol officers also conduct preliminary investigations, enforce traffic laws and engage in self-initiated activity. The patrol division uses foot patrol, one- and two-officer cars, undercover cars, motorcycles and bicycles to patrol the city of Spartanburg. Officers are equipped with marked patrol cars complete with computers, and other equipment needed to perform their duties. They spend the majority of their shift working from their vehicle while out in the community so they are accessible and available to the public. The patrol division recognizes that input from the community is vital to determining policing strategies. Officers attend community meetings to interact with residents and address their concerns regarding law enforcement. The Patrol Division consists of three (3) platoons each led by a Watch Commander with the rank of lieutenant. Each platoon is staffed by three (3) teams and each team is supervised by a sergeant. Two platoons rotate between the first and second shift every two weeks. The third shift platoon is a permanent shift. Officers work an 8 ½ hour shift on a four on – two off rotation schedule.
